The film I believe is of likeness
to ours is the film Omen. I believe this to be so as the film starts off in
what seems like a simple night in a business man’s work day. We see this day
play out through a calm atmosphere almost as the man needs to tell his wife
something.
The Omen also features many aspects using the innocence of a child
which suggests there is no horror element at all this can be seen through our
film as many of the reactions to events almost seem as though they are not a
horror element, however we see this as a drastic build up from almost pure
innocence to the element of horror that reveals itself later on.
The viewing of events are shown through flashbacks such as the
birthing of the child are comparable to that in our film with the elements of
something bad happening being shown through flashbacks and foreshadowing
through elements and characters in the film. This similarity or almost not
horror-like elements help create what I like to call a traumatic build-up of
suspense as through using contrasts of innocence or softer horror we can see an
unexpected viewing of what the viewer came to see contrasting their attitudes,
due to this we can 'hit them hard' with something that has had so much time to
build up that a sudden shocking event later in the film that gets more
traumatizing as it goes on creates a comparable situation that really puts the viewer
out of a comfort zone. The casual feel of the film on how it carries on also
helps to create this large build up which provides this kind of element.
The use of elliptical editing in the film also suggests a large
passing of time whilst being supported by non-diegetic instrumental sound to suggest
something mysterious in the air yet not at this moment of time connoting a
foreshadowing of events.
at around 12 minutes into the opening sequence we see a party with
children contrasting against an unusual sighting of a dog this is also used
with a mysterious instrumental sound yet also made more unnerving by the diegetic
pants of the dog being made audible to suggest a build-up of tension.
I believe our film is able to build up tension this well by making
evets that seem almost pointless appear to be an actual plot development point.
One key part of this scene in omen, however, builds up the sound
providing this sense of foreshadowing and then is quickly interrupted by child’s
laughter and screams giving the 'jump scare' feel to the film whilst making the
viewer seem as though this event was just mild, allowing them to believe that
they are able to get back into their comfort zone.
This is proven false by the insertion of a scene that involves
what appears to be an attempted suicide by one of the family members providing
that large contrast of innocence and horror in one scene. This also creates an
almost microcosm and out of body experience for the viewer that contrasts these
two major themes and how they felt from beginning to the this point in the
film.
I believe that this is what style our film is strongly portrayed
on as many seamless elements are large pieces of the increasing picture that
help to provide what is a psychologically traumatic experience, when the
happiest of days becomes one you will never forget, not because of the
enjoyment but because of an incident that strongly resonated with such an
impact on the psyche.
