Certification of the film

The certification Of the film will help to create elements of a film for our target audience. The films certificate also limits us to what we can and can't do.

For our film we have decided a certificate 15 film would be suitable as it allows us to portray more horror-esque elements.

Discrimination
Our film does not include any discriminatory language however, racist and homophobic language is allowed as long as it does not promote the use of this language.

Drugs
Due to the content of our film there may be the use of drugs as medicinal for our mains characters mental illness. The film does not ,however, promote them for recreational use.

Imitable behaviour
Dangerouse behaviour should not be included in great detail, as our film includes he use of a knife and a theme of suicide, we must not promote this in a great extent or show photo-realistic representations of this.

Language
Our film does feature the use of strong language. Strong language is allowed depending on the manner used, there are little limitations however to the use of this in our film.

Nudity & Sexual Activity
There is no nudity in our film as this does not express any of our films themes or ideas. With this there will be no need for sexual themes or behaviours in this film.

Threat
Our film is based upon strong horror elements and threats to people, this is perfectly fine for our wanted certification as long as this is not a sexual threat or sustained sadistic threat that may scare audiences.

Violence
Our film features violence through the aspect of someones neck being cut open, our wanted certification does not prevent us from doing this aslong as the extent of the film does notdwell in this pain or the infliction of this pain. The nature of the violence in our film is almost self defence like thus not creating any sadistic intent or depiction of sexual violence.

Due to this we believe our film suits the BBFC certificate 15 criteria and does not extend significantly out of these boundaries. THis suggests to us that our target audience is also suitable and will be willing to watch a screening of the film without being mentally scarred or wish to imitate any of the actions seen on the screen.

Results from our Survey

Our group had decided to create a survey that would allow us to get opinions of our film idea and see trends in which we could use to help understand our viewership and make the film better.
This is a collection of the survey results which concludes with our responses to them. This will be useful to help us produce the film and find out any significant improvements that are needed.

Question 1 asks about the data subjects age this helps us to define what age range in interested in our film and helps to set a target demographic which can be easily catered to.
Our survey results show us that the majority of respondents are 16 years old which fits well to our original idea for a certification 15 film and a target audience of 15-20 year olds.
This helps us to identify and cater for this age range by catering for 15+ as this was the lowest age we had that answered. This helped to fit our original idea which also allows us to add more horror aspects to the film and help produce a more appealing horror and psychological aspects to the film.

Question 2 asked the interviewee about their gender, as this helps us to create a target demographic and cater towards the majority of fans/interests. The results show that the majority of people that chose to answer were male whereas the second most identified themselves as 'Other' which allows us to target our demographic toward males, however leaves the ability to cater for more females as this would then bring more female audiences to view the film.
Due to this we have chosen to target our Film toward females by having a female main character of about the age range of 17-20 which may creates a sense of relatability to the audiences.

The male orientated demographic allows us to have a male character and create more powerful horror events that can scare this type of audience whilst creating a sense of horror that they can appeal to. This has also created the idea that a murder can take place meaning that there are more horror elements that can be developed upon further in the film.

Question 3 asks the occupation of the people answering the survey. This also helps us to gage interesets and similarities to our film. The majority of subjects were students suggesting they will relate to a student like figure around the age of 16-17.
The student orientated demographic has allowed us to create a more specific target audiebce allowing us to cater for the older 'teen' and giving it the ability to have a more horrifying element to it.

Question 4 was a key question asking users what genre they prefer. This would help decide if making a horror film would be worth it. Would we have enough interest?, is there a demand for horror orientated films?. These were key questions that needed answering. Luckily the answers were found.
The results of this question show that the majority of subjects prefered a horror title as this was their favourite genre of film. This proved to us a demand was there and that the interest for a new horror film was there to allow us to start producing to what people wanted. However this also revealed that there was a large demand for horror films meaning our production team had competition and the film needed to be fitting to the liking of the subjects and proposed target audiences which leads onto question 5.

Question 5 follows on from question 4 by telling us if the subjects enjoed the storyline and helped to prove we had the ability to produce to the demand of these people. The subjects were asked how they would rate out basic plot this would then, if scores were high enough, provide us the knowledge that we had a shot at producing a successful horror film compared to our competitiors.
The results also factored in average star rating which gave us an average star rating of 3.59 out of 5. This told us we had the ability to develop yet had a solid plot as the results were 1.09 more than half score suggesting there was more interest in the story and themes of the film.
The largets pecentage of people(35.29%) however did choose 4 stars sugesting that there were only minimal elements that distasted the subjects.

Question 6 asks how the subjects prefered to view films, this would allow us to see what kind of distributors we could use to distribute our film and on what kind of platforms.
The results tell us that most viewing of films and media is throught the online streaming medium, such as netflix or hulu. This means that we must find a distributor to allow us to publish to these types of medium whilst also catering for the other two largest answers Television and other(DVD's and other forms of viewing). This suggests that we will need to be able to save the final cut into a modern format that is a standard on all devices. This would allow it to be read on all devices and websites. For this we have put forward the MP4 format.

Question 7/8 were the final questions that ask what kind of settings and sounds the subject would more likely see in our film/ horror genres in general. This helped us cater toward the subjects and also cut out the sound research aspect as we now know what is wanted and what is expected. This also goes for Locations too.

Through the queationnaire we have been able to produce answers to what is needed to help make our film successful. It also also been insightful to help us produce a more specific target audience and hw to cater toward them.

Overall group film idea

The opening sequence:
The first shot to the opening sequence is a mid shot of a girl (Lucy) standing on the roof of a building shaking her head. The reason why we chose to do this as the first shot is to get the audiences minds thinking of why she is up there. The next shot is a point of view shot of Lucy looking down at the ground to show the audience how high up the character is. The next shot fades to the title scene with everyone's names on and then fades back in to a long shot of Lucy walking down the street, and the actresses name swipes across the screen. This is to represent a flash back that she is having leading up to why she is stood on the building and tell a story to the audience. The next shot is a mid shot of Lucy walking towards the public toilets and then a point of view shot of Lucy walking down the stairs towards the girls bathroom. The next shot is a long shot from the bathroom door of Lucy going into a toilet cubical. You then hear the sound of the toilet flushing as a mid shot of Lucy exiting the cubical. The next shot is a mid shot of Lucy trying to get the tap to work so that she can rinse her hands, the next shot is a close up of a drop of water falling from the tap. Then a zoom out to show a close up of frustration on Lucy's face.

Distributors

Film Distributors

Distributors are companies that will publish the film they seem suitable for commercial use. They are responsible for marketing the film and help provide a suitable response and audience to suit the fiml. They are normally thrird party to the production company and are an important peice for getting the film of the ground.
We use film distributors to also provide the ability to exhibit the film in different formats and theatrical viewings. They are also a major part of public relations and making sure the audience and the producers are in contact to help improve aspects of their next film or help give good feed back, through this also includes posters and trailers.

There are two types of film distributor, they are mainstream and independent. Mainstream distributors include the big six which are large clonglomerates that you see at major motion pictures such as 20th Century fox, Sony and even Disney. These play a large part in the film industry due to their large amounts of money and many profitable subsidiaries which allow them to gain large amounts of income.

Third-Party distributors such as the clonglomerates above are responsiable for the full
line of advertising such as material and strong campaign that would not normally be supported by the production compnay. Large distributors have such profitability that they are able to spend large amounts on marketing and distribution, sometimes even up and between $3.5 Billion-$4.0 Billion a year.
Distributors must ensure that film has sufficient sellings at box offices and ensure that the film has been physically delivered, releaving production companies of added stress through a contract system.
The distributors also help with the creation of posters, trailers, tv comercials and online banners to attract the largest audiences and find ways to track and target demographics through different campaigns.
This can then lead to international release which needs to be dubbed or subtitled and censored through each countries film industry and governmental laws. These will then will either go to your distribution companies global offices or a studio partner with native distributation links. This may then give it a foreign liscence an then produce it internationally.

Independant distributors, however have little to no income from any subsidiaries or profitable sister companies, this leads them to distribute through hard earned profits and more unique methods, however this can be done through more unique means such as self distribution or as kickstarting methods or through film festivals in which they will be paid investments to self distribute.

Self distribution is when the production team will also produce their own posters, trailers and print outs, pretty much a whole self made advertising campaign. These rescources are dependent upon cost and the knowledge of advertising. Doing this in the UK also means you must hire a specialised PR company to make sure the National film press will see it and be informes, you must also sign up to the British Board of Film Classification and they must view and review the film in detail, and it must be chosen over the other 10-15 other releases. You must also then convince many cinemas to agree to screen your film, whilst also providing them a universal format to view the film on such as DCP and then also ensure the film physically reaches its destination. This leaves much of the roles of a distributor to the production team which may be small and not have much money to produce many copies thus making travel cost expensive if many wide spread cinemas wish to screen it, this is hard however is significantly cheaper than third-party distribution, but the cost comes out of each persons pocket hitting the individuals hardest.
